First off, THANK YOU all for your donations and contributions to Shelby and her medical fund! We are proud to say that with the money we have raised her medical expenses will be COMPLETELY paid for...AMAZING! We live in such a giving community, and we could not be more thankful. If you did not get a chance to donate to Shelby's fund and still want to give to a great cause check out your local rescue or human society. Here in the Whitestown area The Humane Society for Boone County is taking in cats and dogs daily that need care and support just like Shelby!
There are a lot of updates to tell all of you including:
-Surgery Recap and Radiographs
-Post-Op Recovery Timeline
-Finding Shelby her Furever home
The surgery with the specialist went very well and Shelby has learned very quickly how to get around with her cast on! Shelby had a comminuted fracture of her elbow, which means it was broken into multiple pieces. The procedure she had performed utilized a pin, screws and a small plate to hold everything together. Without this surgery, Shelby's triceps muscles would have continuously pulled on bone fragments and prevented normal healing. Without proper healing of the elbow, Shelby could have needed that leg amputated. Needless to say, we're so happy for Shelby that the community came together to save her leg!
As for her recovery, she will have her cast and splint changed every week for the next 3-4 weeks, then at that time we will do another set of x-rays and evaluate how the joint is healing. If the healing is going well, we will then remove the splint and she will enter a phase of limited activity for 2-3 more weeks. After 2-3 weeks we will start the rehabilitation and therapy stage! This stage will be longer (12-24 weeks), but is very important to getting her leg strong and mobile again! Her recovery won't be easy, or quick, but she has a lot of people pulling for her!
Now for the question everyone has been asking about: will Shelby be up for adoption?!? The answer is YES! We are not sure when that time will be, but we are currently preparing for the adoption process. Each potential adoptee will have a questionnaire to complete and a home check will also be included. Shelby is a very special girl, and will need medical care throughout her life due to her injuries, so finding a home for Shelby is very important. If you are interested in adopting Shelby please stay posted to our Facebook page for updates!
We are so excited about Shelby's future and can not thank everyone enough for everything you have done for Sweet Shelby!
